Conclusion: This Sears/Taiyo Off Road Buggy is an amazing time capsule, and has had very little use (it is almost new). The tyres are like-new, and the model runs perfectly. The unused decal sheet has some wear to one decal, but I believe it is still workable if you want to apply the decals. A very nice scale model and showpiece. Rare condition with the original box and all paperwork. Priced according to rarity, condition and past examples I have sold.

History

Taiyo’s “Off Road Buggy” is really more of a Jeep than a buggy, and indeed was used as the underlying basis for the Jeep Renegade which Taiyo also manufactured for Tandy/Radio Shack stores in 1983/1984. Similarly, the Sears department store in the USA sold the Off Road Buggy under it’s own branding, with decals you had to apply, and even an exploded view diagram included that showed all the spare parts you could buy. The model itself is powered well by 5 x C cells, and was also the first and only model Taiyo ever produced that had a Digital Proportional transmitter. It was sold under Taiyo branding in Japan and elsewhere, but the Sears version seems to have been relatively popular. Highly versatile also, is it’s switch-selectable 3 speed gearbox which, for 1983, enabled the vehicle to trundle over more obstacles in low gear than most of the other ready-to-run R/C cars on the market at that time. A very scale-like model that harks back to a lost era of realistic toy shop R/C cars.
