History

The Nikko “Mini Thunder Bicky” was a 1/18th scale companion to one of Nikko’s very first sophisticated R/C models, the Big Thunder – a large, 1/10 scale yellow beach buggy. I have no idea what Nikko thought the “Bicky” part meant, but let’s just call it the Mini Thunder for short… it was a small, 2WD R/C beach buggy made in Japan, with 2 speeds, soft rubber tyres, and great looks. Powered by 8xAA batteries (a lot for it’s size), you certainly don’t find R/C models like the Mini Thunder in toy stores anymore, with it’s bright, 70s retro appeal and heavy plastics. There’s no differential of course, but this little car certainly looks unique scampering around on the floor, and even better sitting on your shelf. The front windscreen frame folds up/down, and the radio reception is quite good for it’s time. If you’re a fan of early R/C beach buggies, the Nikko Mini Thunder may be the cutest one ever made.
