History

By the late 1980s, R/C monster trucks were in full swing, and Nikko developed some of the most rugged ready-to-run examples available. The Black Malibu 4WD was one of their largest – 1/14 scale, with huge, soft tyres and good torque across post high and low gears. It shared platform similarities with the Radio Shack Wild Horse (which Nikko also manufactured). And it is typical of the sort of heavy, ready-to-run R/C monster trucks that the Japanese companies were making in the 1980s. You’ll certainly find nothing at all like this on toy store shelves these days. A true classic 80s R/C pick-up, and one for the true monster truck fan. Fun fact: an R/C model extremely close in design to the Black Malibu 4WD, was used in Terminator II: Judgement Day in 1991 – it may have been the Black Malibu slightly modified, or a very similar model from Nikko’s line-up around that time.
